Why Is American Politics Increasingly Spiritual—and Increasingly Anti-Christian?

Cornwall Alliance For The Stewardship of Creation: In 1993, Democratic Congressman (now Senator) Chuck Schumer introduced in the House, the late Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy introduced in the Senate, Congress passed—unanimously in the House and with only three dissents in the Senate—and Democratic President Bill Clinton signed into law the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). In 1997 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the RFRA did not bind state governments, though it could bind the federal government. Since then, 23 states have passed similar laws binding their own governments. The RFRA is meant to protect the free exercise of religion guaranteed in the First Amendment to the American Constitution. In recent years, however, assaults against the RFRA have multiplied, with laws requiring people to perform tasks that violate their religious conscience (e.g., for healthcare workers, abortion, or for bakers and photographers, baking cakes or taking photographs that celebrate homosexual so-called “marriage”). Those and multiplying other instances exemplify the increasingly religious—and anti-Christian—nature of American politics.
