The State Department is warning of the Chinese government’s “malign influence in free societies,” and said the regime uses methods that are “covert, coercive, and corrupting.” During a virtual speech with the Hoover Institution and Stanford University, David Stilwell, assistant secretary to the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said China “challenges the free and open nature of democratic societies.” Meanwhile, with the November 3 presidential election coming up, Chinese banks have been seen swapping dollars for yuan to curb their gains, but Reuters reports that if Trump is re-elected, this could reverse the regime’s currency gains through the yuan. And, the CEOs of big tech companies Twitter, Facebook, and Alphabet, which owns Google and YouTube, recently testified before the US Senate about accusations their companies have been engaging in political censorship, and about the prospect that they may lose Section 230 protections that shield them from being sued for their users’ posts. The Justice Department is now urging lawmakers to consider updating the federal law that grants the company protections under Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act. We’ll be discussing these stories and more in this episode of The China Report. #BigTech #CCPRetaliation #MalignInfluence
